Reading/Spelling Assessment

Basic
Reading Skills Assessment and Consultation:

The purpose of this assessment is to give specific information on reading skill levels and instructional needs for parents teaching their own child or for pre-testing prior to reading therapy for those who do not choose the comprehensive evaluation.

The testing session will last approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours and will consist of informal, criterion-referenced, or normed tests which will measure areas such as phonemic awareness, phonics (code) knowledge, word reading (decoding), oral reading fluency, and spelling.  For a small additional fee, vocabulary and reading comprehension can be added. A one-hour appointment will be scheduled to discuss the test results and instructional recommendations with the parent. This assessment includes a score summary and does not include a formal, written report.

Comprehensive Reading Evaluation:

This assessment will cover the 5 major areas of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, oral reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Additional areas that may be assessed are: working memory, rapid naming, oral comprehension, spelling, and visual perceptual skills.

The Comprehensive Evaluation can take from 2 1/2 to 3 hours and will be scheduled in one or two sessions. A parent conference will be held within two weeks to discuss the results and recommendations. This evaluation includes a written report.

Reading/Spelling Therapy (tutoring)

We offer explicit, systematic decoding (phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency) instruction, as well as spelling and handwriting instruction. For children whose decoding and fluency are adequate but who still struggle with comprehension, we offer instruction in vocabulary and comprehension strategies.  Each child is assessed prior to instruction, and an individual remedial plan is designed.  Home practice is required in most cases.

We use the very best research-based, multisensory structured language teaching methods available today. We have been trained in Lindamood-Bell® LiPS , Seeing Stars , and Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension , Language!, ABeCeDarian, Phono-Graphix, SRA Corrective Reading, and Orton-Gillingham.   A minimum of two sessions a week is recommended.

Handwriting Assessment and Therapy

We offer an informal handwriting assessment and handwriting therapy for printing or cursive. This can be integrated with the reading and spelling instruction or as a single program.  Children receiving handwriting instruction alone will come two to three times per week for 20-30 minutes per session.  The Handwriting Without Tears® program is used.

Consultation

We offer local and long distance (phone and email) consulting regarding children with learning difficulties. This may include interpretation of school or private testing, recommendations for IEP goals, evaluating the curriculum being used with the child, and testing or curriculum recommendations. We also have a special interest in assisting homeschool parents design remedial instruction and choose curriculum.
